REGE 29. AUG 14

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG.

22nd July, 1914.

sir,

54889

14889

With reference to my despatch No.107 of the

22nd April, I have the honour to report that Mr. Baker, the Engineer of Way and Works, has since Mr. Winslow's depart-

ure on leave, performed the functions of Acting Manager of

the Railway in addition to his own duties.

2.

Mr. Baker's work is consequently practically

doubled in volume, and he has no subordinate officer with

the requisite knowledge of engineering to assist him in

carrying out the duties of his own post, which are of a

purely technical nature.

3.

In consideration of the zeal he has display-

ed, and the greatly increased quantity of work which he is

called upon to execute, I recommend that he be granted a

bonus of $150 per mensen during Mr. Winslow's absence, and

I have to request your sanction accordingly.

I have the honour to be,

sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LEWIS HARCOURT, M.P.,
